Guide to Purchasing a Cat or Kitten
Purchasing a cat or kitten Following is a checklist for prospective pet parents to take with you when purchasing or adopting a cat or kitten.

All prospective owners should ask the following questions and obtain the relevant documentation:
  • Vaccination certificate
  • Worming history and when next due
  • Microchip transfer of ownership paperwork (if available)
  • Pedigree Papers (if available)
  • Dietary needs & special likes or dislikes
  • Is the kitten or cat desexed?
  • Is the cat or kitten familiar with children or other pets?
  • Check for clear bright eyes.
  • Make sure there are no signs of flu, eg: runny rose or sneezing.
  • Are the ears clean? Check for deposits of brown wax as this could be an indication of ear mites.
  • Ensure that the coat is flea free and shiny.
  • Does the cat or kitten hiss or spit at you on approach? This behavior suggests inadequate socialization and may not necessarily make the best pet.
  • Look for the cat or kitten that runs up to you with affection or seems bold and inquisitive.
When choosing a cat or kitten, make sure it appears healthy and is happy to come to you.

If you have any doubts, you should not adopt or purchase the cat or kitten. Your purrfect match is out there, so continue your search. Note: It is recommended that you take your new pet for a veterinary check within 48 hours of purchase.
